Exploring the Hidden Gems of Ottumwa: A Journey Through the Heartland

Hi Folks!

One of the goals of my blog is to document my travels and reflect more on the experiences surrounding my performances while I'm on the road.

Recently, I was invited to perform at the American Gothic Performing Arts Festival in Ottumwa, Iowa. Although I had heard about this festival before, it typically didn't require a tuba for their concerts due to its smaller community size. This year, however, not only was there a symphony concert needing a tuba, but the festival also included the musical Annie with its original instrumentation.

The score for Annie is a unique opportunity and possibly the only complete musical score written for the tuba. I recall encountering discussions about this on Tubenet. The debate revolved around which key of tuba to use, with the consensus being likely an Eb or a small C. Revisiting these thoughts became clear once I saw the score. The tuba has a significant role, but you're also accompanying children who aren't amplified. The score's range extensively uses the lower register, suggesting that a small, versatile tuba in Eb is a good choice.

I also enjoy seeking out good dining spots. I've been neglectful over the years exploring and experiencing new things in various places I've been. So, I visited the renowned Canteen for what is essentially a Maid-Rite loose meat sandwich.

It was delicious, but I think this picture truly captures the essence (not of the sandwich, but of the overall atmosphere).
